PCR Testing

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing is a process that tests for the presence of viral RNA (RiboNucleic Acid) in a sample (semen, serum, or tissue). In PAB's case, it is the testing of semen for the presence of PRRSV RNA. This test is performed for PAB at South Dakota State University Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory. SDSU does a nested-PCR test which is very sensitive and very highly accurate in the detection of PRRSV. PCR testing the semen is done to protect customers from the risk of transmission of the virus in semen.

During April 2002 to March 2003, PAB tested well over 1 million doses of semen with 100% of the semen being PCR negative. PAB is the leader in the semen industry with regards to PCR testing and setting the standards for the rest to follow.
